Why when things are coming to an end are they said to "PETER" out and not fred or arthur out and why when things are floating are they said to "BOB" up and down in the current and not jim or bill, are there any more like this I ask myself and does it really matter????

Bob is your uncle when you achieve something because of family connection or just easily, without effort. A saying since the days when Robert Cecil, Lord Salisbury, appointed his nephew, Arthur Balfour, to a succession of government posts, a piece of nepotism which ended with Balfour becoming Prime Minister. The saying didn't appear in public print until after Balfour's death; you can't be sued for libel if the person defamed is dead!

To peter out started life in the mid-19th century as miners' slang in the USA, but there is no known explanation as to why that name was used.
