boxtops is right, it's from Romany. All the rest is just folk etymology, all wrong, it doesn't stand for anything.

Posh isn't port out, starboard home either.

Actually proper dictionaries are ambivalent about the origins of this word, most only saying that it is 'probably' or 'possibly' from Romany.
