Hi, I'm trying to write something but I'm stuck on the correct word to use. I want to say I was "lying in a field full of buttercups", but should it be lying or laying?

Have tried Google, but am still unsure.

Thanks :-)

laying
laying
I would think lying, as in the present tense. Laying, is when "I had been laying" past tense. I could be wrong!
You were not telling untruths in a field of buttercups.
You lay the table, you lie in a field.
The past tense of to lie is lay.
The past tense of to lay is laid.
I agree with Patsy. Lying is better for present tense.

It's past tense.

Thank you all very much :-)

Why did you not say I was REALLY ENJOING myself in the field when I noticed the Buttercups x
Lying.... laying suggests the production of eggs...I am asuming that eggs are no part of the meaning you wish to convey........!
Laying certainly does have to do with eggs, but its colloquial meaning also has to do with sexual activity! "He was laying his girlfriend" means something very different from "He was lying with his girlfriend." The first is naughty and the second is not.
The answer to your question is definitively "lying"!
Lying

''I was laying in a filed ", the connotation is that I was in the act of laying something in that field

Yep, BA gone to wrong answer.
I was taught that hens lay, people lie
Laying would only be correct if you were a hen or similar laying eggs in the field (or laying a table or flagstones but you'd need to mention the table/flagstones for it to be understandable). I suppose you could also be describing what you were doing with a partner but I think there are more romantic terms that can be used.
