Just to add a little to the answer above...the word comes from the old name - Serendip - for Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Horace Walpole, the English writer, created the word in the 1750s, based on a fairy-tale called "The Three Princes of Serendip". It seems these characters were constantly discovering wonderful things they weren't actually looking for.
