just wondering whether people have a motto or philosophy that they live by and what it is?

Better to regret what you've done than regret not doing it at all (already posted by someone else above) and
'Shoot for the moon; if you miss you'll be among the stars'. That one was actually the puchline of a bad joke, but I agree with the sentiment - do your very best, and even if you don't hit the top, you still do well.
I also like one similar to one of the others above:
The darkest hour is just before dawn.

I used to have some problems with people accepting me for who I am in high school, which is when I came up with this:
"I am what I am, I'll do what I do, If you've a problem with that - I don't care, F*** you!"
That may seem very self-righteous and ignorant, but I'm generally a nice guy, so what I am and what I do really shouldn't pose a problem to anyone.
