where did muffins orginate from?

The word 'muffin' itself is of obscure origin, but it may be connected with the Old French word 'moufflet' which meant 'soft' when speaking of bread. If that is, indeed, the source, then it's quite likely muffins originated in France.
Surely muffins originate from muffin farms in Muffinland - or so i am led to believe.
According to Oxford, there's also a possibility with the "Middle Low German" muffe (plural muffen) meaning "little cake"
