Alternately, Word of the Day states: There is a 17th century falconry term cadge, which was a frame on which hawks were carried to the field. This is probably a variant of "cage" and might have resulted from confusion with the verb "cadge" meaning 'to carry about'. A cadger in falconry was the man who carried the cadge. A falconry Web site says that most cadgers were old falconers, and that's how codger came to be used for an old man.
