This is another poem by ruth fainlight. she writes: who told me my place? I guess she means no one told her where exactle she belonged. I can't find this as a phrase anywhere. is it a known phrase?

Perhaps they believe you are lower class and therefore not suitable to be in the same places or enjoy the same pleasures as they do...they are 'inside' whilst - in their view - you are 'outside'. Your 'place' in this sense just refers to your position in society.
