This is another poem by ruth fainlight. she writes: who told me my place? I guess she means no one told her where exactle she belonged. I can't find this as a phrase anywhere. is it a known phrase?

To 'tell someone his/her place' means that someone or just society in general has an opinion of who and what that person is. Perhaps they believe you are lower class and therefore not suitable to be in the same places or enjoy the same pleasures as they do...they are 'inside' whilst - in their view - you are 'outside'. Your 'place' in this sense just refers to your position in society.
