Where does the term "Showboating" come from? ie.. when a boxer/footballer shows off his skills in a particular easy match

Showboats were American river vessels on which theatrical performances were given. Think of Mississippi paddle-steamers in past times. As a result, the verb 'to showboat' came to mean putting on a dramatic performance to entertain a crowd and show off your skills, just like a ham actor.
