all year we have had magpies and robins in our garden; feeding daily off the bird table; till last week two magpies were fighting on the ground till one killed the other. since then we have not had a magpie or anyother bird in our garden or anywere near . please can anyone explain it
Some birds are territorial - I think magpies qualify, so it looks like there was a turf war.
It may be that the other birds are waiting to see if King Magpie is around before they chance coming in for a nibble - but if he doesn't appear, they will gradually return.
yes, it is the way of nature I'm afraid. They are getting into breeding condition and the strongest one survives to pass on his genes to the next generation.
As Andy said, the others will return after a while. Birds feel very vulnerable when they are feeding and will avoid any situation where mayhem goes on.
