Forgot the name of the book and the author

I read a wonderful book several years ago. It was about a policeman who battled a dragon, that was controlled by one of the townspeople, a man. The guy would perform some sort of ritual in a remote part of the town, calling forth the dragon to kill his enemies or people who had displeased him. It was also a romance story between our hero the cop and a female. I forget if she was a townie or not. If anyone read this book and remember the name and author, please let me know. I would love to purchase it again, as my copy was lost. Thanks

Thanks, but it's not Guards Guards. This book was set in modern time, the villain inherited the control of the dragon from his father. Naturally the cop/hero saved the day and the dragon killed his master. It's a terrific read, but neither my sister nor myself can remember the title or author's name.

I wish it was. "Dragon" is not part of the title, that's why I'm having such a problem finding it.

justmickie this sounds very much like a Tom Holt book, as it is his style of writing to match modern settings with mythical happenings. I couldn't tell you which one it might be though, sorry!

Thank you for your efforts leelapops, cancross and bednobs, you guys are wonderful, the authors and books you suggested are great finds for me as I have never read their works; but it still isn't the book. I am going nuts trying to think of the name of the book, or even the names of the key characters, at least it will be a step in the right direction. I don't think the book was a best seller though, and like I said, it's a book for adults. I do remember that the main characters was a policeman/detective, a rich man who lived in town (he had control of the dragon) and a lady. It started out with the dragon killing a guy and the police thought it was a bear attack. It wasn't, the guy had an affair with the rich man's wife, therefore, he called forth the dragon and had him kill his wife's lover. I think he used something personal of the lover, in some ritual that was necessary to get the dragon to come out and kill this guy. One day, maybe when I'm grayer and have some leisure time, it's come back to me. Thanks again.
