cat or dog

I live at the seaside.
Given the salty air, would I be better off with a cat or a dog? I would not want a pet which had a constant dry cough.
No naughty answers, please.

I have had both cats and dogs and lived on the cliff top at Happisburgh (where the houses are falling into the sea) and none of my animals ever had a cough of any sort.
It depends more on whether you are there all day and whether you have the time to spend with a dog, if not then get a cat, but if you have the time a dog would love to live at the seaside. If you live near a busy road, then a cat is not a good idea. Also a cat would not appreciated being taken for a swim in the sea.

I seem to recall you live in Whitehawk or somewhere near Brighton.
Well my parents have had dogs all their life and all the dogs have been bred and lived in London. To my knowledge none of them have ever had chest problems.
If they can survive the London smogs and horrid air, I am certain they could live in Brighton, which has very nice quality air to my recollection.
Therefore go for a dog.
Cats are pointless.
