I read the book in the 1960s, when it was almost compulsory reading for any self-respecting 6th former who wanted to appear hip. That and "Catcher in the Rye".
I have since attempted to reread both and couldn't make head nor tail of either.
Anyone had a similar experience with these sort of "bibles" of youth?
I loved Catch-22, judy, but didn't get Catcher in the Rye at all - hugely over-rated, IMHO. A book that was very big in my teenage years was The Dice Man - another load ot tummy-rubbish, if you ask me. Mind you, I'll fight anybody who says that "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance" isn't a great and important work...
