Because in the early days of rap and hip-hop, young black teenagers would gather on street corners to play their msuic, and dance. Since the manufacturers soon realised that these ghetto dwellers wanted big powerful systems, known then as 'breat boxes', they made the larger full sound versions, which do what the label says - they blast the ghetto.

Another term for them in the 1980s was 'Brixton briefcase', Not very PC, I know, but probably used as much by their owners as by anyone else.
