Help in settling an office argument - What does it mean in Court when someone appears on petition?

This means they are the �petitioner� � this is the name given to a person making an application in family law proceedings, such as a divorce, ancillary relief proceedings etc.  The other party (e.g. the person being divorced) will be the respondent.
