Shalom to a Jewish person means     Hello    Bye and Peace  so if you say it to them how does a person know it you or them are coming or going.

A recognized authority on Bible words, Strong's Concordance has for the Hebrew Shalom ..... A word study in the New King James version for Shalom, says: Completeness, wholeness, health, peace, welfare, safety soundness, tranquility, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony, the absence of agitation or discord.

So, it's possible that one could speak Shalom and colloquially mean goodbye or hello, but the best English translation is nothing broken, nothing missing, complete in everyway.  To speak this to someone is a great blessing on that person indeed...

"Ciao" in Italian means hello and goodbye too.  You can work out whether a person is saying hello or goodbye by noting carefully whether they are walking towards you or away from you, I would have thought....!!
