In our family there was a superstition that if a picture falls off a wall or topples over, someone is going to die. This was in Devon. Did anyone else have this in their family or was it a regional thing.

If you fall off a particularly large wall you will die!

It's usually the sound of a bagpiper, hearing a bell or seeing a pale horse. An empty hearse would seem to be fine.
237SJ, I have heard that superstition mentioned in Sussex but it included mirrors as well as pictures.

Vulcan, yes I vaguely remember something about mirrors. I remember my gran had a picture at the top of her stairs and one night it just fell off and bounced all the way down the stairs without breaking. In the morning she found out that her sister had died.
yeah in Darzet ( adjoining county ) it was the same
In Hampshire where I grew up, it was mentioned among Aunts I recall. It never happened, so it was never proven, thankfully. Goes off now to secure all things on the wall. !

I grew up in Berkshire, was the same there, also said if a wild bird came into the house.

The reason I ask is because my Mum`s got end stage cancer and was taken to hospital yesterday. I don`t thik it`s the end yet but my sister has just been around to her house and her wedding picture has toppled over. Weird.
I think, that superstition, is pretty much universal.
