Originally from the classical Greek word, 'polis' meaning a city. This gave 'polites' = a citizen, then Latin 'politia' and French 'police'.
I should perhaps have pointed out above that, in ancient Greek cities, the citizens themselves were responsible for the regulations and discipline enforced. Hence, the modern idea of a force dedicated to maintaining the rules and public order.
