Why do we regard "K" as an amount of money ie:�10000 =ten "K" what does the k stand for

K is for kilo, which means 1000 -- as in kilometer, kilogram, etc. Remember Y2K? Year 2000!
When someone says "it costs 10K" they assume you know what unit of money.
uhhh....I always thought K meant potassium, so i never really understood.
