Sleep after a busy day

if you've had a busy day, but not necessarily doing ahuge amount of exercise to completely wear you out, why do i find it hard to get to sleep?
Yesterday, i did coursework and homework, spent 3 or 4 hours helping out with oliver, then went to a quiz then did an hour of badminton. They wore me out a little bit but not like a few hours of rowing would.
So how come I was still awake at 2am? i didn't go to bed too late.
Plus it was probably a dream, but i sware my radio alarm was going off at about 4am and only the snooze button would turn it off (I remember pressing every other button but nothing else worked) and it didn't go off again until 7.15 what do you think?

And it is tiring and draining! Mostly through boredom though I think. This week has been better though as my man has been working from home so had some company. Doing naff all is surprisingly hard work!
This may sound daft, but try this old meditation trick.
When your mind is whizzing round, and your thoughts are racing,you need to calm things down.
get comfortable
Concentrate hard on your feet - how they're feelin - cold / hot/ aching / whatever.
Do this for some time.
Then think hard about your forehead, how it's feeling.
After a while, think how your feet are feeling again.
While you're doing this, your mind stops whizzing, and the next thing you know, it's morning.

I've learnt to switch off a lot better over the years as my jobs have always tended to involve long hours and be difficult to switch off from.
One technique I used to use was to lie and, starting at my toes and working up, imagine each part of my body, bit by bit relaxing - a nice way of doing it is to imagine lying on a warm beach and do it by imagining the sea gradually washing in and out like the tide relaxing each part of your body, essentially focussing on something simple and repetitive which helps your mind stop whirring on other things.
