Not that I doubt you chelle7272, but I'm slow.
a nickel's an American coin so would be in New Yorker's pocket

Yup, but after establishing where the "ni" in nickel comes from, how do we get the rest of the answer?
As chelle says Ni is the chemical symbol for nickel

I've got that bit, but that still leaves "ckel" and I have no idea where that comes from.

If I may...
Where it says IN turn up, it implies that you should reverse IN (turn it up in a down clue) to get NI.
'Briefly' then implies that NI as an abreviation.
NI being the abbreviation of Nickel.
Hope this helps. It took me ages to fathom that one too!
