Some of the clues are titles of John Steinbeck novels, but one has me baffled. I have looked on the web for all the novels and stories written by this author and none of them fit one of the clues. Can anyone help pl?

11,12,16,1,31 - "Ancient city is clad weirdly among subjects with novel that often come unstuck (3,4,4,7,2,4,3,3) I have solved clues 1 and 31, which make "of mice and men" but the first part eludes me. Is there a novel which is so obscure the internet doesn't know of it? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you everyone. The internet info did not include the first part of the novel's title, that's why I couldn't get it. Thanks.
