Perhaps it is too much Sammy Hagar addling my brain, but I can't finish today's DM crossword.

20 across, size, for example, ring for intimate friend, (5,3). I have A?T?R, ?G? and am sure it is "alter ego", but why?

23 down, occupy block, (4) I have F?L? and suspect it is "fill" but, again, why?

For 8 down I have Papua New Guinea, but how do you get this from the clue?

alter ego?
Your answers are correct, as to why, you just have to think about the clues. Not always obvious.
size [alter] + for example [eg] + ring [o] ?

I got the ego bit quite easily but the alter was perplexing me.

Cheers for the help Janpot, I didn't realise thinking was involved. God only knows how I got the rest of the answers. I've spent ages on the Papua New Guinea clue, removing the word "genuine" to see if it is an anagram, but am still stuck, hence my reason for posting.
Rather uncalled for Janpot.
8d. Something like - pap(u)a +genuine+w(ithin)+a ?

Thanks mamyalynne, I try not to post unless I've exhausted my limited brain power, and I've been stuck with Papua New Guinea since before lunchtime, so I thought it was a bit unnecessary too.
Totally and there are some odd folk out there, good luck.
im still stuck on a couple, as to that Papua new Guinea, had to seek answer elsewhere.. anyhelp would be great

I can see occupy, as "fill", as can my thesaurus, but neither of us have block as, "fill". Over to the font of all knowledge that is Janpot......
i think todays was rather obscure.

.............and i might add that switching to Rodrigo Y Gabriela hasn't helped the old thought process much?
I thought about full along the lines that if something is blocked, it is filled up with something!
.... apologies - Fill is what I have put too
Far more difficult than the telegraph to-day
Dad grabs you - Pap(u)a
Genuine ground (Genuine mixed up)
+ W(ithin) + A
Phew!
As for Janpot, their contributions to this site usually consist of 'What's 16d?' and suchlike. Waste of space.
