Malt Whisky help needed
24 Answers
Hi Malt drinkers. I bought hubby a bottle of malt last year and, although it was recommended, he thought it rather strong and mighty. Can anyone recommend a smooth, honeyed malt that I could buy him this year please. It will have to come from one of the main supermarkets though. Thank you. Cheers.

Sorry, I should have mentioned. He does enjoy malt whisky. If only I could remember the last one I bought him. Drat, my middle aged brain is not firing on all synapses. I just remember him saying it was rather too mighty and harsh for him. It had won awards, that's why I bought it. It just wasn't to his taste. I appreciate that some whiskys are fine for people who just want the odd dram, but he does enjoy a good malt, it's just finding one that I can buy at a localy supermarket today. I've been laid up with a lurgy for two weeks and haven't been able to get out. So I just want a whisky that's not too mighty and harsh - a smoother whisky if you will. Thank you again, it's very interesting reading your comments, you obviously know your stuff.
I assume you're taking about the middle one? Thanks again everyone. This is really helpful.

Don't buy Glenfiddich it's a waste of money, it is horrible, the last sample my doctor took had more character.
Problem is finding something to his taste, if the last was too heavy, avoid island malts they are heavily peated whiskys (I love em) they are not for girls ;-). Jura is nice as are a lot of the lowlands and highland malts. Speysides are for girls unless they are more than 20 years old.
Glenmorangie is a nice drinking whisky, bags of flavour but not too heavy, the 10yo is okay, the 15 better and a bit deeper the 18 year old is a class drop of whisky and my normal tipple. Any older you get into some exceptional complex whiskys, I have a 40yo madiera casked Glenmorangie it is truly sublime.
There are a lot of unusual whiskys around just now, The Bruichladdich distillery have a number of exquisite whiskys on the market that might suit your need.
