Please help - I have loads of answers but can't fit them in. Please can anyone tell me what the clue about French directional indicators means to help me start writing in the answers?

In the correct solution, the words for North and South (but not East and West) are in the appropriate positions, ie. top and bottom. The grid can also be completed differently, with across answers becoming down answers etc, but this solution is wrong because NONE of the directional indicators is then in the right place.
