. . but what a stinker, albeit with some memorable clues. One to go: 22ac He directs agents to lose (6). Solution must be MISLAY (M + ISLAY, a scottish island which is part of the puzzle's theme). Can I take it that M is the director of spies of James Bond fame, more recently resurrected as a she in the form of Judi Dench ... but then rudely despatched in Skyfall?
And if 27 ac is SPELLBIND - Take turns to restrict entrance (9) - isn't it a bit unfair, grammatically, to have spell = turns?

Thanks to Frugalfred and Lie-in King. Yes, I agree that spell and turn are close enough in meaning for one of the definitions of spell, but surely 'turns' in the clue should be singular?
To spell is also to take turns with someone,
