27 A. Milton's preface resolving spite at shelter (7) ??i???e
6 D. Answer (dry) covering poor player's turn in NY (5) ?t??t
(I can see 'stint'/turn, but have no reasoning.)

NB. The preamble to this crossword says there are 'single extra letters yielded by the wordplay' in most clues.
Thanks for any help.

Neveracrossword - thank you, I messed up the down clue so Lahore looks good!
Thank you Slaney!
Can anyone just tell me that I'm right in thinking that the words in the 23 squares start with LWNOF in that order.
Thanks in advance
Question Author
Yes, that's what I had.
Thank you Neveracrossword
I too have completed everything, and I've found two well placed link words - one starting with L and the other with W. I keep looking at where I thought the missing 10 letters should be but am not making sense of anything, apart from the word FIRM jumping out at me. Am now completely at a loss so would love some help please.
Look back down the diagonal from firm, words are 6,7, 3, 3, 4 , bent in a "hairpin" shape
Thanks Negomi. Assuming that the 6 and 7 you mention are the L and W words I've already found I'm now reassured I'm looking in the right place but maybe have a mistake in my 3,3 as it's still not making much sense!
Question Author
Indy-trier, you are almost there - or maybe just all there and not realising it! After L and W there are two three letter words before Firm.
If one of them is NOT then I probably have a mistake in the other - or maybe I just don't know enough about the subject! Still feeling dim!
Question Author
NOT is correct, followed by OLD, followed by F...
If you know nothing about Scottish football, this probably makes no sense!
I think you probably have the right answer, without realising it.
Thanks Neveracrossword. I actually had the wrong answer for 17d giving me a meaningless Spanish word! I was totally dim!
I slipped up on 17 down at first.
Thought it was MOK, which is the abbreviation used for the Mull of Kintyre festival.
