27 A. Milton's preface resolving spite at shelter (7) ??i???e
6 D. Answer (dry) covering poor player's turn in NY (5) ?t??t
(I can see 'stint'/turn, but have no reasoning.)

NB. The preamble to this crossword says there are 'single extra letters yielded by the wordplay' in most clues.
Thanks for any help.

It could easily be, depending on what the unknown word is.
Have you spotted the W word?
Question Author
The W word I have noticed is just a three letter word - I was searching for a longer word (ie more than the 10) for the first word.
It has just clicked - we might be looking for more than three words!
I can't help thinking the unknown word must be geographical in some sense, given all the the 'items' are in the same place.
The W word is 7 letters. It carries on from the 3 letters i'm guessing you've got.
The last 2 letters change direction and run from right to left.
Taking a break. Catch up later.
Question Author
Was just about to post to say that I was doing the same! I'm hoping for a 'eureka' moment when I look at the grid later.
Question Author
Boreas, just before I go - thanks for the info on the third word. I didn't think to change direction.
Question Author
I've got it - at last!
It is not a geographical connection.
I don't want to spoil your enjoyment of finishing this off, boreas, so I will try to provide just a simple nudge...
The first word begins near where the last one finishes,
Hi Never,

Yes, I was just logging on to say the same!
Now I need to think about the title.
Wasn't sure what you meant by the 19 referring to the unclued answers?
Question Author
I think my earlier reasoning was that 19 was the number of [what the unclued entries are] who'd played in the ???????? ??????? L?????.
(This has 23 letters, so I initially thought that's what I was looking for, to highlight). Hope that makes sense!
Yes, I can see where you were going with that.

I wonder if 19/116 is some sort of 'score', perhaps relating to the members of the OF. I googles to see if it was number of times each had been W, but it's not that.
Question Author
I thought the 19 was the number of times the OF hadn't won - I'm sure the total I saw (in a list of statistics) was 116.
Hi Never. I couldn't get on this site last night because of a malware warning.
Anyway.
19 is the total number of times that the non-OF items have have won.
116 is the total number of seasons.
Half an hour looking for the start of the phrase before the missus informed me she had got it last night- brilliant!
What always kills me is it's always so hard to find hidden words, but so obvious when you do.
Ah, I think I have it - try ??? ??? ???? L????? ???????
I've still got a few blanks though - the one that's really bothering me is 41 A. See men in the city (6). The extra letter is T and I have LA_ARE.
Thanks for any help!
Question Author
Oudemia, glad you found the stuff to highlight.
I no longer have the paper, but I think 41 was Lahore,
Can anyone help with the wordplay to 7 down: Foreign character, learner on vacation at house (3) RH_ I'm sure it's rho but don't understand why!
Thanks in advance
Learner on vacation (vacated) = LR
House HO , with L as the extra letter
