I have a clootie dumpling on the cooker, helped son to make it(I read the instructions to him,he done all the rest)he is making it for his dad,he doesn't know young slinks is making it for him,it will cheer him up.
a clootie dumpling is a dumpling boiled in a cloth(clootie)in a pan of boiling water for 2/3 hours.it has flour,brown sugar,treacle,syrup,currants,raisins,suet,bicarb.of soda,cinnamon,ginger,milk,i added a wee drop brandy.
It really is brilliant tonyav. Most Scottish folk know at least someone who makes it around Hogmanay and there are many variations of the recipe - some passed down through family generations.
Some might use cinnamon yet some may use 5 spices or nutmeg.
Some may use whisky or brandy or a liqueur.
You can also buy it ready made from Scottish shops but it's just called Scotch Dumpling which is fried for breakfast. Yum yum.
