Happened near to my house about 5 years ago. It blew a heavy cast iron manhole cover 30 feet into the air landing on a parked car. It made a very strange noise when it was blowing. The lights flickered but the electric stayed on.
what with torrential downpours, sinkholes, homes, businesses being flooded, one wonder what's the next disaster, a typhoon, hurricane betty,
a tsunami, seems a very weird time.
It was some kind of underground junction box that failed. Looking into the hole, it was bricked and dry. National Grid dug it out and put in a new 'part'.
There was a longer BBC report on this issue from last year, contains a couple of instances where there was an explosion on CCTV - really quite a frightening concept.
