Greenfly.

I'm sick to death of bloody greenfly in my greenhouse. I've sprayed with greenfly killer so much that I think I've killed off some of my plants.I've sprayed with diluted washing up liquid and I've even looked on line for the price of buying live ladybirds, but at £15.99 for 25 ladybirds I think their too pricey. When I find greenfly on my plants I take the infected plants out of the greenhouse and spray them then leave them outside for the next twenty four hours to make sure they don't re-contaminate the bug free plants in the greenhouse. Is there anything else I can do to get shut of these little Bas*^"ds. ?

Buy a few predators and release them in your greenhouse ?
Maybe a ladybird or two; or whatever.

My dad was a gardener all his life - served his time from age 12 and finally retired at 82. He always swore by warm soapy water sprayed on all his plants in his greenhouse. Washing up liquid would probably do just as good a job as more expensive remedies.

I remember my father fumigating his greenhouses with a pellet that you put a match to. I don't know if you can still get these, as they were toxic.

horrible things but they work.

personally I would cough up for the ladybirds as they will only target the greenfly.

Get some colour into your greenhouse by adding some flowers These in turn will attract the ladybirds. Some are better than others, therefore I wont go into detail about which ones to get/grow... someone else can do that ... http://www.laurasorganics.co.uk/articles.php?article=4

Personally I have Viper Bugloss and Nasturtiums at the entrance of my poly tunnel and greenhouse. Having just done my tomatoes this morning, I can assure you that these encourage the ladybirds in as they were covered in them. Make sure you leave the doors open as you don't want it too hot.

One more thing I forgot to mention ... you don't have too much greenery on your tomatoes do you ?
Remove as much unnecessary foliage as possible, this will leave less for the greenfly to hide under.

Going back to what was said in one of your earlier tomato queries ...

1.. Remove all the suckers

2.. Remove all the side branches up to the first flower as these just sap up the goodness from the earth around the tomato. Your plant will benefit from the extra light and ventilation. Your plant may look a bit spindly, but the fruit will be better for it.

Last week I did this and filled 2 wheelbarrows and today I managed to fill 1.
Will be returning to the allotment this afternoon and will try and remember to take a picture of what I do .. to help this make sense.

Iv'e sent off for one of those "smoke bombs" it should arrive tomorrow. Then hopefully is will be mass destruction with dead greenfly all over the greenhouse . Thanks to everyone for all your tips and suggestions.
