The 'O' belongs to the clue 13a) Vessel in which a chemical or physical change is made to take place (8), to which I put REACTION.

I'm leaning towards hidebound due to the religious/strict connotations of the word. Anyone agree, or can you convince me otherwise?

Yes - clue is referring to vessel as a singular, leading to my preference for 'reaction' but it was definitely worth considering the new information and reevaluating! I'm still leaning towards hidebound over limehound... though the clue is so vague both could fit.
