hi my dog went into have surgery done but when they cut her open she was worse than they thought
i work opposite the vets.... so i went over to the vets and ask how she was doing and they said she just gone into theatre i said ok .... then 9 mins later i got call saying they cut her open and saw she was a lot worse than they said .... i had to decide then weather to let them carry on or put her to sleep ..... they told me she would only have a 5%chance any way even if they continued .... anyway i got my bill £905.16 and 662 of it was for the surgery which did not happen they only cut her open ... so my question is should i have to pay for it because nothing can be done in 9 mins surely.... the rest is for the cremation and putting her to sleep which i mind paying ... i just think its wrong if the surgery didnt go ahead that means i was charged £73.55 per min and 9 mins £662.
looking forward to feedback thanks
You must have signed a consent for surgery to take place, its normally permission to go ahead and do what is necessary. Having signed that you are liable for costs incurred.
The main cost is the preparation for surgery , the premedication the anesthetic and cost of staff having to get ready. Another 1/2 an hour or so on the operating table would not make much difference. So the cost is fair and you have to pay.
In addition to eddie’s answer, surgery costs also cover the cleanup and deep clean of the theatre after surgery which would also have to happen regardless of the outcome. I am very sorry for your loss but the costs are reasonable.
We have two very large dogs (Irish Wolfhounds)and while one has been no bother, the other has had to have two quite large surgeries.Luckily we have Pet Insurance which paid nearly all the vets bills.Even allowing for the Insurance Premiums,we still save an enormous amount of money.
just like to thank you to all of you for your comments
we understand now why so expensive ... but at the time my head was all over i was so upset with the fact i lost my little girl xx
thanks again x
Perhaps they could have deducted the cost of putting her to sleep as they did not have to do the surgery they had anticipated. Just a thought but would have been a good gesture on their part. So sorry you lost her, it's very hard mou53y, as we animal lovers know.
