Mephisto Crossword

although a fan of st cryptic crosswords I have never attempted a mephisto. looking at last week's mephisto answers there are words I've never heard of and I wonder if there is a differentway to approach it as opposed to an 'ordinary' cryptic

However, in barred puzzles there are fewer unchecked letters in the solutions, this generosity to the solver being offset by (i) an extension of the vocabulary to include everything in the Chambers Dictionary (2016 edition) as well as a wider selection of proper nouns, and (ii) the use of more obscure indicators and abbreviations, eg 'shares' as an insertion indicator (meaning 'cuts, cleaves'). Apart from having Chambers (paper or electronic version) close at hand, the approach should be essentially the same as for a blocked cryptic.
hi spoffy
I meant to get back to you sooner thanking you for your helpful comments. however I thought I would give it a few weeks in order to persevere with mephisto 'solving'. regrettably I am no further forward although getting the more obvious cryptic clues is not a problem. as to the rest of it I am just as baffled even knowing what the answers are. for a man of a certain age with a decent education my vocabulary is not up to it so I shall stick to the ordinary ST cryptic. thanks once again for your advice
