When the skin dries, it can become rough and flaky, with small tears that can lead to deeper cracks called fissures, which can extend into the deeper layers of the skin

The answer is not fissures. It is a more technical term, beginning RHA...
That should enable you to find the answer in the dictionary.

I did think that fissures was too simplistic for Azed, but looked up your answer Nescio and found another new word to me. I assume you have the crossword ?
