If the crossword did infact write ‘planes’ in the clue, then it gives more hint toward transport.

Iron horses were indeed the early trains.

Before that the Natives rode their horses over the plains.

Maybe it's meant to be a pun towards cluing?

Captain, it's not so hard a crossword, I usually finish it within an hour of getting the magazine on a Monday morning . I suppose I've been doing the crossword since being a teen and it's easy testing but ok, and I won a few times from it :)

I find a good crossword can keep me busy all day. Especially now the birds have become much more prominent in my garden.
