Friend has asked me to go to the cinema with her when this film comes out on the 13th September. Do you think it would be necessary to have watched the TV series to enjoy this? Would I have to maybe know the characters?

highly unlikely, half the point is to get a new audience. But leaving the house on Friday the 13th is at your own risk...

Have you seen Gosford Park? Broadly the same sort of thing, same writer.

It can only be a compressed version of the TV series so I suspect you will miss nothing by not having seen it. I watched it avidly, just to see the great Dame Maggie Smith in full flow.
