I can 'call on Fred' (as a synonym for 'visit Fred') but I can't 'call in Fred'.
If I change 'Fred' to 'the off licence' though, I can 'call in the off licence' but not 'call on the off licence'.
Looking for a synonym for 'drop by' though (rather than for 'visit') appears to suggest that 'in' is the better option.
