Is This In The Normal Range....
39 Answers
Or should I see the Doc?
Booked in for a telephone appointment with a lung nurse, who will then assess whether any further investigation is needed.
(Its a free, over 55's consultation for smokers & ex-smokers)
I was asked to get my weight and, if possible, blood pressure beforehand.
Got my sister today to do BP.
It read
158/93 sitting down with heartbeat of 91
158/93 standing with heartbeat of 100
It seems a little high to me (both BP & Heartbeat) but I know theres still a safe range to be in...just dont know what it is!
6ft tall
17 stone
ex-smoker (Though constantly chewing on nicotine gum)
Thanks in advance.

>>> Is it worth bothering my Doctor with . . . ?
Definitely! You're at FAR greater risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke than someone with 'ideal' blood pressure.
While your GP would almost certainly want to look at the underlying causes of your hypertension (such as the excess weight that you're carrying), his/her first step would almost certainly be to prescribe something like amlodipine tablets. (I'm on them myself). They're definitely 'no big deal'. You simply take one a day and your BP drops to a more reasonable level - and, yes, you can drink alcohol while taking them ;-)

I agree dave. It doesnt take into account of muscle mass for one.
Ive been at my present job for 3 years and the weights that im lifting everyday (15 - 20+ kilo crates) everyday have given me hardened upper arm muscle. Better than a gym workout and I get paid for it :-)
Do have midriff fat though...
Chris & 237,
cheers for replies and much appriciated.
Got telephone next Monday, see what she/he says but think I will def make app with doc based on what you both say.
Thank you.

Waist measurements aren't influenced by muscle levels:

I agree, this is what I dont get with these kind of diagnostics...
A high BP and heartbeat might be linked to having cycled a mile (which I did) and chewing on a nicoret gum (which I did) before having a test.
(admmitadly 20 mins later when I thought bodily functions had calmed down)
