I have first 5 words and the last word from extra letters. Missing one or two in the middle.
I am not sure how 8d parses.
I have only 3 clues from which strings are removed.
8d looks like the 4th one you need, hankir - 'sheriff in [notting]ham...' ['notting' is extra] anag of HAM+'(awar)E'+''R(ob)IN'S'' (ob = 'died') with 'in revolt' as the anagrind.

I am not sure what Notting has to offer and also Hill.
The number I get is the same as a famous novel and the theory was worked on by two people almost 40 years ago.
Not sure what the end game is.
The number refers to another novel - not the really famous one (you've just a about rejigged the strings as it is - put the other two in front of them).
