Can somebody explain why "stagger out to lunch in the wrong direction" is nuts please?

It's stun backwards.

I actually thing of 'out to lunch' having a slightly different maning to nuts/bonkers.

To me it used to mean too confused to know what is really happening, or vacant/not really there.

As the Sex Pistols lyrics went:

"There's no point in asking, you'll get no reply
Oh just remember I don't decide
I got no reason it's all too much
You'll always find me
Out to lunch"

But the meaning does seem to have changed to nuts/crazy
