Diary or Journal?

Okay, I know this might sound wierd, but I was having an argueement with a fellow employee today. So, here's the question we argueed; what came first? The journal or the diary? I thought that diaries were first, then the term journal was eventually adapted for men. The co-worker thought that journal was first because it was a recording of journeys. Who was right? Or were we both wrong?
