Remote Control problem

On Wednesday night my remote control for Targa DVD Recorder started to fail, ie., it worked eratically or not at all. I thought it may have fallen and got damaged so I started a process of elimination, first of all by replacing the 2 aaa batteries. It still gave problems. I gave up until later same night (11.30), tried it again and it worked perfectly. I mentioned this to a colleague next day and through sheer co-incidence he stated that the same thing happened to his TV remote control. I can only put this down to weather conditions, high pressure etc (so that RC worked when evening cooled down). Has anyone got any clues as to what caused this.
