It would have been better if your landlord had increased the rent yearly, rather than all at once. �75 per month increase in 8 years isn't bad at all, although I understand it would be a shock to the system.
If this is a normal private tenancy (assured shorthold or similar) then the law does not come into it. If it is a tenancy where a rent has been registered as a "fair rent" with the rent officer then any new rent also has to have the rent officer's agreement.
From what you say, I think it is likely to be the former, but your tenancy agreement should give you the information to decide.
