it took me awhile as the preamble stated that the 6 letter word was the correct word. In fact it is not, so dont let that confuse you.

take one of the lines in the rhyme in a more literal sense and the columns will start to stand out with a number of examples

eddery, as jamesah says, the bottom line does rather give it away. I found my way into the last step via column three.

Thanks Midazolam & BobbyCollins ... don't know where my brain was for a while, particularly as I had all the other elements & no doubt about the overall theme.
I was also very happy with my six letter word (something else which should have nudged me in the right direction at the end)

correct me if i am wrong:

my impression therefore is the 6 letter-word example is the correct letters to be entered in the grid - that is not my final grid

anyhow i am happy with the final result

I can see where your confusion arose M ... you are reading 'correct' as meaning correct grid entry. However, it seems that what is intended is 'correct' meaning the original letter before the enforced misprint.

Perhaps it would have been clearer if Schadenfreude had said 'originally correct' or even 'replaced'

I'm finally happy with the final result too!
