Detour in this case means to go round - attempt (TRY( is going round finish (END) to get to the answer in (TRENDY).

I also had Trendy for the reasons mentioned above by Catron, but in my view the clue is perhaps unfinished, and should be extended to add fashionable or a similar word after "detour."

I took it that the first word i.e. IN = Trendy, so the rest of it fits.
