How can I check who lived at an address at 1871?
I have the birth certificate for my Gt Grandmother showing an address where she was born in 1871 but I can't find her or her mother on the 1871 census. Her father is at his family home with his parents; he shows as married and I also have the marriage certificate so I'm sure I have the right chap. My Gt Grandmother was actually born on the night of the census (what are the chances of that!!) so possibly that is why she doesn't show but her mother must be around somewhere. By the way I'm looking for a Jones in Wales !!!
Any ideas of websites where I can search by address instead of individual? Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. Haven't tried Kelly's etc so will give that a go.
Dot - I did consider that she may be home with her parents but I can't find them either! I only know the fathers name, her rough age (as she was 'at full age' on the marriage certificate) and the town where she was supposedly born. Her name is Ellin Jones b Llangollen 1848-1850, father is Edward Jones. Have done something like the searching you mentioned without any luck yet.
I think it is also possible to view all the census returns for a town by viewing the 'next' and 'previous' page on ancestry.co.uk so I can look around the fathers street in the vague hope that the mothers family lived near by!

I've had this problem with my father's parents. His eldest brother was born around the time of the 1901 census and I can't find either the parents or the child. I suppose if you are in labour and some guy comes round with a census form, you are going to tell him what he can do with it!!! Either that or the men were in the pub celebrating and the women were otherwise occupied.
You can look on Rootsweb for 1871 strays. these are people who are away from home on the day. if you can get the street at the 1901census online (there is a charge) then it would be marked if they were away from home that night.
