I dunno, but to stick a post on this thread at 7pm on a Friday night to say that you've finished the Listener and are settling down for dinner reminds me of some the very smug entries on the Crossword Centre threads. Good for you but beyond publicising what an immensely clever chap you are I don't know in what way it benefits the rest of us.

I picked at this puzzle over 4 days and enjoyed gradually tumbling to the denouement. I feel a little bereft when I whizz through the Listener and have most of a week to wait for the next one. Chacun a son gout

My own gout is to savour a puzzle and appreciate the niceties as they emerge. Whizzing through at 100 mph isn't to my taste (or ability).

The clever clogs who finish The Times in 5 minutes flat surely cannot enjoy the puzzle itself - just the satisfaction of knowing how jolly clever they all are.

I enjoyed Explanation, but could anyone offer me one for the wordplay at 18 across please ?

Only if you invent a verb to correspond to the adjective which is in Chambers.

add a 'v' in the middle of your answer and look that up in Chambers.

It's 17D that's got me (though I had got 44A wrong). Any hints?

17d is one of the four clued without definition.You are looking for a word for deep-blue without an abbreviation for 'is'....

Didn't mean it to look cocky in any way. I just wanted to highlight that it is probably a nice listener for beginners. I really enjoyed it even though finishing it quickly. No it doesn't benefit us regulars, but I am hear to help if I find a posting unanswered.

Thanks Deviant - I must have been half asleep to miss that one! I confess,I didn't bother to solve 17 Down at all because the 'group anagram' made it unnecessary, so thanks to ITB for clearing that one up also.

Thanks IntoThe Blue. Had previously suspected that it was one of the four & confirmed by posts above, but had never heard of the deep blue & was looking for 'is'. You'd think after 7 years I'd know better.

Anyway all done & time to look at a few Xmas crosswords before Friday, starting with the Spectator.
