It may be a stretch, but this is an island mentioned by Homer which Strabo placed in the middle of the Atlantic
(the exact location is in dispute, but it may have been volcanic).
The rationale is phae(ton) = old car
+ ian (Scottish Jock)

Thanks for the attempt but I believe the answer is Dominican - old car = mini , d = deserted and apparently ca = drive in Scottish - which i must admit I would not have got in a long while !!
Thank you so much Copelander - I have to admit that I might have been pondering for a long time on that one. However I have very much enjoyed the crossword and am about three quarters there.
