I'm sorted on Slender but puzzled by ValeriE and it's relationship with the clue.

There have been other discussions on this, both on AB and on the Crossword Solver forum. Many have opted for the rather unlikely VALARIE. It occurs as a variant of Valerie, as a Google search will confirm, and is an anagram of Valeria/Vale + Ria. I can only conclude that Valarie is the required answer or that Araucaria has had a senior moment. Even though I'm 44 years his junior, I can totally empathise with that!
